The port has a discharge facility for oil and bitumen. These two commodities constitute 90% of the current throughput.
Folan Quay handlers the discharge of oil tankers directly to two oil storage facilities via underground pipelines operated by Topas and Leeside Terminal. The total storage held by the two terminals is 35,000 cbm.
Typically, tankers of 4,000 tonnes can be easily accommodated at Folan Quay.
Cold Chon Ltd. handles in excess of 60,000 tonnes of bitumen at the port. This commodity is set to increase with the continual growth of the bitumen membrane plant (Coletanche Ltd.) located at the Harbour Enterprise Park.
The Colethanche membrane utilises the bitumen as a raw material in the production of a membrance which is used in the lining of landfill sites etc. Bitumen is discharged at Dun Aengus Quay North in shipments of 3,800 tonnes, typically.
An additional underground pipeline has been laid at Dun Aengus Quay North to facilitate the discharge of tankers up to 6,000 dwt to the Leeside Terminal.
In 2004, the Harbour Company commissioned a modern fire fighting facility at Folan Quay.
