Galway Harbour has discharge pipeline facilities for refined petroleum and Bitumen. These two commodities constitute 90% of the current throughput
   
 

Folan Quay handles the discharge of oil tankers directly to two oil storages tank farms via underground pipelines operated by Topaz Energy Ltd and Leeside Oil Terminal Ltd. The total oil storage currently is 35,000 cbm. Typically oil tankers of 4,000 mts can be easily accommodated at Folan Quay.

   
 

In 2006, construction of a new oil storage tank farm (42,000 tonnes) commenced at the Galway Harbour Enterprise Park. This new facility is expected to be complete by early 2008.

   
 
Cold Chon Ltd. handles in excess of 70,000 tonnes of bitumen at the port. This commodity is set to increase with the continual growth of the bitumen membrane plant (Coletanche Ltd.) located at the Harbour Enterprise Park.
   
 

Bitumen is discharged at Dun Aengus North Quay. In December 2005 the Bitumen oil tanker ‘Bitflower’ discharged 5,200 tonnes of bitumen to the Cold Chon tank farm. This vessel represents the increasing size of bitumen tanker handled at the harbour.

   
 

Additional underground pipelines exist for the discharge of oil tankers in the range of 5,000 to 6,000 tonnes dwt at Dun Aengus North Quay to the Leeside Oil Terminal.

   
 

In 2004, the Galway Harbour Company invested in a modern fixed fire fighting system at Folan Quay. This new system is fully automated and provides a fire fighting system with the latest equipment.
